Round one of the Whitefish doughnut lawsuit began in court. The first hour of the city’s lawsuit against the county saw arguments for the city’s request for an injunction barring the county from rescinding the interlocal agreement authorizing the doughnut area, the two-mile planning and zoning jurisdiction outside city limits.

20 years ago

April 30, 1998

Whitefish was recognized for being a “Tree City USA” at an Arbor Day observance by state community forester Mark Lennon. Lennon presented then-Councilor Jan Metzmaker with a plaque, flag and sign that recognized the town for its efforts in planting trees.

30 years ago

May 4, 1988

The area saw its first bear of the season as the nice spring weather brought our furry (and hungry) neighbors out of hibernation. A 275-pound black bear was bothering a West Glacier family before being trapped and released north of Whitefish.

40 years ago

May 4, 1978

Accessibility was the topic at hand for the Whitefish City Council. Councilor Don Doyle led the way to get reserved handicapped parking in Whitefish after the Flathead Chapter of the MS Society informed him of the lack of accessible parking. Wheelchair ramps were also being added.

50 years ago

May 2, 1968

Fire season started early in 1968, as the first fire of the season roared near Spencer Lake. An early forest and brush fire roared out of control and required 15 responders, consuming about 25-30 acres of woods before settling down.
