Basketball clinic

The Wave is holding a boys and girls youth basketball clinic on Saturday mornings March 31, April 7, 14 and 21. Fifth and sixth grade is 9-10 a.m., prekindergarten, kindergarten and first grade is 10:15-11:15 a.m., and second, third and fourth grade are 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Pre-register at the Children’s Depot at The Wave or email carrie@whitefishwave.com.

Learn to Skate

The Glacier Skate Academy offers a new session of Learn to Skate classes April 3-May 17. Registration now open at glacierskateacademy.org. Classes are on Tuesday 5-6 p.m., Thursday 5-6 p.m., Friday 9-10 a.m. Classes include professional coaching of skating skills and practice fun and generally consists of eight to 10 skaters. If there are three or fewer skaters class may be canceled or shortened to 30 minutes.

Raffle

The Trego Pub and General Store is raffling several items as a fundraising event for the Alzheimer’s Association. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the pub. Contact proprietor Tod Swan at 882-4600 for details of items being raffled.

Adaptive Sports

Action Rentals is hosting a raffle for Moving Forward Adaptive Sports.

Action Rentals is selling 150 raffle tickets and winners are eligible to win one of three adventure packages prizes. Grand prize is a two day, two night, adventure for four including ATV, pontoon boat, kayaks and paddleboards. Second prize is for four people including a day adventure on a pontoon boat. Third prize is a fishing boat rental for water time for four people. Action Rentals anticipates drawing to be held April 15. Tickets will be sold on the Action Rentals Facebook page and with four options: one ticket for $20 or two tickets for $35, three tickets for $50 or four tickets for $60.

A portion of this raffle will go directly to Moving Forward Adaptive Sports, which provides adaptive recreation activities, while the remainder will be utilized to cover costs of prizes, taxes, fuels, etc.

Foresters meeting

The Montana Society of American Foresters will hold its 2018 State Meeting April 13 and 14 at Grouse Mountain Lodge in Whitefish.

Friday’s presentations will include fuels management, federal wildfire funding reform and lessons learned from the 2017 fire season, a news release states. Saturday’s program covers the history of Flathead National Forest wildfires and a field trip to area fuels management projects.

Gov. Steve Bullock has been invited to speak during lunch on Friday, while dinner that evening will include awards and a presentation by Dr. Ron Wakimoto on wildfire in Bhutan.

Audubon tour

Join Flathead Audubon for a magical mystery tour of one of the most unique areas in the Flathead Valley on Saturday, March 31, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Guide will be Brian Baxter, forester and wildlife researcher, who has taught outdoor educational programs for over 16 years. The trip begins with a one-hour classroom session to view and discuss the slide presentation “The Essence of Animal Tracking.” The group will walk into Owen Sowerwine to visit its wetlands, and study the wildlife, vegetation, and predator/prey relationships that give this area its special flavor. Along the southern trails, the group will search for and identify the track patterns and sign of the weasel family, muskrat, beaver, and water loving birds such as Great Blue Heron and American Dipper. There will also be the chance to scope for birds of prey, waterfowl, woodpeckers, and songbirds. Come prepared for the day, with proper layers, lunch, water, binoculars, spotting scope, bird books, and waterproof boots or snowshoes as conditions require. The trip is limited to 15 participants. Homeschool Theater Club

The Homeschool Theater Club will be performing “Annie” on March 30 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and March 31 at 7 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center.

The club caters to the home-educated students of the Flathead Valley and each spring puts on a musical production with 48-60 students ranging from 7 to 20 years old.

Baseball

In celebration of spring and the return of baseball season, Flathead Valley Community College’s Library invites the community to a book reading by historian, author and baseball aficionado Rob Bauer. “The Boys of Summer Are Back: A Celebration of Baseball History” is scheduled for Thursday, April 12 at 7 p.m. in the FVCC Library, located in the Learning Resource Center.

Bauer, a history professor at FVCC, recently published two books about baseball history: “Outside the Lines of Gilded Age Baseball: Gambling, Umpires & Racism in 1880s Baseball” and “My Australian Adventure.” In addition to reading passages, he will discuss the research and writing of the two books.

The evening will also include refreshments and a baseball history trivia game with prizes awarded to top players. The event is free and appropriate for baseball lovers of all ages.
