Local businesses were worried about losing some customers after Whitefish High School was considering ending its open campus lunch practice. The open campus lunch started after the school had to use its cafeteria for counselors offices and a science classroom. A $21.5 million bond proposal to remodel the school included a full cafeteria.

Feb. 26, 1998

The proposed Moose Run subdivision at the base of Big Mountain got the OK from the Whitefish City-County Planning Board, but not without some worries. Concerns about emergency escape routes in the case of a fire had some asking for a secondary route out of the subdivision, which would hold 52 townhome lots and four condominiums.

30 years ago

March 2, 1988

Members of the Whitefish Education Association were boycotting volunteer activities to protest their lack of a contract. Whitefish teachers had been working without a contract since September, and the protest hoped to get the school board’s attention and figure out a solution.

40 years ago

March 2, 1978

Local residents expressed interest in a county-wide ice skating rink during a Tri-City meeting. Floor plans for a covered skating rink and arena facility were displayed at the meeting, suggesting the county fairgrounds and Whitefish for the county rink.

50 years ago

March 1, 1968

A group of junior high students used their skills to help others study in peace. Students constructed a row of study carrels, which looked similar to telephone booths and offered a place for quiet and isolated studying.
