Five FVSEF racers head to Western Region Championships
Five members of the Flathead Valley Ski Education Foundation’s Academy Team have been selected to compete in the Western Region Championships at Alyeska Resort near Anchorage, Alaska.
The championship races, including Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super G and SkillsQuest, will be conducted on March 21-25. Flathead racers Colin Harper, Ian Calaway, Tyler Anderson, Mikaela Daniels and Stella Eddy qualified for the championships during January and February events hosted at Whitefish Mountain Resort, Red Lodge, Big Sky and Bridger Bowl.
“This group did an amazing job all year long,” said FVSEF Coach Kurt Nelson. “From summer camp at Mt. Hood to fall camps at Panorama to the racing season just winding down, they worked super hard and really stuck together as a team.”
Western Region is one of three major regions in the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association. In addition to Montana, the region includes Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota, California, Nevada and Alaska. A total of 170 competitors, ages 14 and 15, from throughout the region were selected. In total, six men and seven women were selected from Montana. FVSEF claimed the most qualifying spots with five, followed by Big Sky with four, Bozeman with three and Red Lodge with one.
The Regional Championships will qualify skiers for the U16 National Championships at Mission Ridge, Washington, on March 30 through April 4.
