Summer art classes at Stumptown studio

| June 19, 2018 12:13 PM

An amazing line-up of art opportunities for adults are part of the programs at Stumptown Art Studio this summer.

Flathead Valley guest artists and instructors Jennifer Li and Loretta Merriman will be sharing their expertise and enthusiasm for some special guest workshops.

Li is leading a series of Saturday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., each costing $55 for members and $60 for not-yet members. In beginning oil painting on June 23, students will paint a still-life while learning about the best materials and gear for outdoor plein air painting. Japanese paper marbling using “floating” ink to transfer paper into a vibrant work of art is her next workshop on Saturday, July 21. On Aug. 18 is “sculpting the head” with Li, where students are guided through the process of creating a small head or bust on armature using polymer clay.

Ceramicist Loretta Merriman is hosting fun clay themes for very different projects. Mondays July 23 and July 30, from 6-8 p.m. are for creating functional platters and casserole dishes. And mixed media windchimes are the Aug. 13 and Aug. 20 project from 6-8 p.m. Cost of each of the two-day workshops is $75 for members and $80, not-yet members.

For an exciting process in ceramics, join resident clay artist Ray Faustini for Rockin’ Raku. During the month of July from 6-9 p.m. on Monday, July 9; Thursday, July 12; Monday, July 16; and Wednesday, July 18, students will first create pottery pieces and then take them through the kiln firing that creates the unique flares in the glazes. Materials included in the $150 member, $160 not-yet-member fee.

Returning for another monotype workshop on Thursday, July 26 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. are guest artists Joan Black and Dennis Johnson. Monotypes are a spontaneous style of creating prints with inks using a variety of materials pressed into the inked plate to create texture, patterns and layers of color for a final “printing” on paper using a press. Adults may bring a child ages 12 and up for the $70 workshop fee/$50 each additional family member. Some of the regular, popular classes and art evenings in June, July and August abound with options for dabbling or in-depth creating.
