Ski Heritage museum sets summer hours
While it’ll be a while before it snows again, Whitefish’s ski museum is now open for the summer.
The Flathead Valley Ski Education Foundation’s Ski Heritage Center Museum of Skiing opened on Saturday and will keep its doors open through Labor Day Weekend.
Following more than two years of renovations and remodeling, the museum features photographic exhibits highlighting Big Mountain’s skiing history; a model of the original Hellroaring Ski Cabin’s interior from 1941; original movie footage of skiing on the mountain in the 1940s; and a selection of books and articles about the early days of skiing in the Valley and around the country.
Work is still continuing on building improvements and outdoor exhibits, but the main exhibit room is open for visitors all summer long.
The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. from Thursday to Sunday. Admission is free, but donations are accepted and appreciated.
The museum is also looking to the community to help find old chairlift chairs, old wood skis, leather boots and bamboo poles, as well as volunteers to cover additional shifts as the museum grows.
