Whitefish City-County Planning Board members were struggling with an issue still present today — to what degree is Whitefish a tourist town? Board member’s worried new streetscaping and design plans would ruin the look of the town to make it more marketable.

July 2, 1998

After years of railroad engine fuel pouring into Whitefish’s ground and water, the Department of Environmental Quality was coming up with plans for cleaning up the polluted areas. Studies had already shown the pollution was impacting Whitefish River, which is adjacent to the BNSF site.

July 6, 1988

Whitefish remained well-behaved during Fourth of July celebrations at City Beach. “Absent this year were the people shooting off fireworks into the crowd and people shooting fireworks at each other,” Whitefish Police Chief Dave Dolson said.

40 years ago

July 6, 1978

As Amtrak’s Empire Builder faced possible elimination, a delegation of spokesmen and businessmen stopped by Whitefish on their tour to speak in defense of the rail. Whitefish was seeing a nearly 2,500 drop in passengers over the last several years.

50 years ago

July 4, 1968

Bad news, bear. A bear trying to get into a home went from amusing to terrifying at a Whitefish residence. The 3-year-old bear fought to get into windows in the middle of the night before the bear was treed and shot by police.
