Wrestlers prep for Whitefish Duals

Whitefish grapplers held their own against competition from all across the state at the Class A Duals over the weekend.

Despite finishing with a team record of 1-6, Ryan Boyle said his wrestlers actually made strides in the competition.

“Overall we actually gained momentum. We kind of stepped up our competition level and competed better than we have earlier this year,” he said. “On paper it doesn’t look like it, but it was a lot better weekend than even the previous weekend.”

Whitefish got their lone dual win against Livingston, but fell to Frenchtown, Browning, Sidney, Belgrade, Hardin and Libby/Troy.

Boyle said the Class A Duals was a good way to see where his team stacks up against the rest of the state.

“It’s hard to tell, it’s one of those things when it all sifts out we’re right in the middle of the road,” he said. “We’re not in the top tier teams but we’re not at the bottom. There’s only two weeks left but we have a long ways to go.”

This week the team is going to get a final round of two-a-day conditioning before hosting the Whitefish Invite on Friday.

Weigh-in begins at 1 p.m. while competition starts at 2.

Polson, Columbia Falls, Browning, Libby, Glacier JV, Eureka, Thompson Falls and Bigfork will all compete against the Bulldogs on Friday.

Boyle said this week is about putting it all together before the Western A Divisional Wrestling Tournament the next weekend, Feb. 2.

He’s seeing the improvements individually, he said, now it’s time to capitalize.

“We wrestled guys [last weekend] that we’d previously been pinned by and we beat them or took them to overtime, so we’re gaining on the competition,” he said. “It’s just can we gain enough when it comes to divisionals, when it comes to state, to come out with that victory.”
