Bulldog wrestlers bring it at Cut Bank Invite

After a long winter break, the Whitefish wrestlers got back on the mat in Cut Bank over the weekend.

Whitefish placed seventh overall at the Cut Bank Invitational, behind a team-best second-place finish from Jackson Carson (103).

Coming off the break, head coach Ryan Boyle said he was worried about his team being a little rusty. However, he said he liked what he saw.

“[We did] pretty darn well. We were a little worried coming off the break, we hadn’t wrestled since Eureka, so we weren’t real sure how we’d do,” Boyle said. “But when it all came down to it we had three guys in the semis and five in the consolations.”

Along with Carson’s second, the team also had several other placers.

Tristan Welch came in sixth at 103, Dakota Flannery took fourth at 138, Jack Eisenbarth sixth at 145 and Keegan Wold fifth at 205.

Among those strong finishes, Boyle said Flannery’s performance in a competitive 138 pound bracket and Wold’s battle at 205 stood out.

“[Jack] had a really tough bracket at 138 and he ended up with fourth. Jack actually wrestled all the way back through the consolation brackets,” he said. “[Keegan’s] been wrestling for a month-and-a-half and he’s starting to figure some stuff out, it’s exciting to watch.”

This week Whitefish battled it out with Glacier Tuesday after press time. This weekend they’ll head to Post Falls, Idaho, for the River City Duals. The following week is the Class A Duals.

Right now, Boyle says the focus is on getting healthy and continuing to find the success they’ve had in the first half of the season.

“Obviously we can always improve, right now we need to get healthy. We’re a little banged up after that tournament,” he said. “Like I told the kids on Saturday when we showed up, it’s team time now. We’ve had individual placers, but if we can start getting all that together, wrestling for each other and figuring some things out, come divisional time hopefully we’re wrestling our best.”
