Five junior racers from the Flathead Valley Ski Education Foundation recently attended a U16 four-day Super G and Giant Slalom camp put on by the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association. The invitation-only training camp was for top Junior Ski racers in the Western U.S.

The top 25 U16 girls and 25 U16 boys from California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Alaska and Montana had the opportunity to train together and get to know ski racers in other parts of the western region. FVSEF athletes invited included Colin Harper, Tyler Anderson, Colter Upton (not attending due to injury), Stella Eddy and Mikaela Daniels.

“This was an important camp and to have five FVSEF athletes invited out of 50 speaks well of our team,” commented FVSEF Coach Kurt Nelson.

Following the Western Region Camp, U14 and selected U12 skiers from throughout Montana participated in a Northern Division Camp on Feb. 7 and 8. This camp focused on the fundamentals of the “Super G” event, and provided a first-time exposure to the “Speed” events (Super G and Downhill) for many of the young athletes. U12 invitees from FVSEF included Brodie Kneeland, Ryder Elliott and Townsend Reed.

Finally, the camps segued into the Northern Division U14-18 Super G qualifier events held Feb. 9-11 on Hangman’s Run at Big Sky Resort.

“This was the only speed event these athletes have prior to the Western Regional championships happening at Jackson Hole for the U14’s and Alyeska in Anchorage, Alaska for the U16’s,” commented FVSEF Head Coach Roy Loman.

The next competitions are on Feb. 23-25 at Bridger Bowl in Bozeman for U16s and older, and Feb. 24-25 at Great Divide in Helena for U14s and younger.
