Debates arose over whether a new high school was needed in Whitefish. Five years earlier voters approved a $10.3 million bond proposal for the school, and now they were looking at a $21.5 million proposal. The bond would fund a remodeling and reconstruction project to expand the size and capacity of the school.

20 years ago

Feb. 19, 1998

While El Niño cut the cold winter short, construction companies in Whitefish were loving the warmer weather. Companies were completing work that would’ve been “unthinkable” at the same time the prior year, like digging foundations and pouring concrete.

30 years ago

Feb. 24, 1988

A procedural error left the Happy Valley subdivision without any zoning or land use ordinances. Ordinances for the area were adopted by the county zoning commission but never adopted, which was attributed to a “plain slip up.”

40 years ago

Feb. 23, 1978

Police found and arrested three juveniles tied to a series of break-ins in Whitefish over the course of the season. The youngsters had broken into the Stillwater Veterinary Hospital and robbed vending machines at the Viking Lodge, the Mountain Holiday Motel and Glacier International Airport.

50 years ago

Feb. 22, 1968

Whitefish Winter Carnival, in its ninth year, saw record crowds with an estimated 6,000 people lining the sidewalk for the parade and other events.
