Ten cars were crushed at Park Avenue apartment after a snow-covered carport roof collapsed. One man was trapped in the cab of his truck during the incident.

Feb. 12, 1998

Sixty years after opening its doors, the Olney Community Church closed. Village Missions decided the church could no longer support itself after suffering dwindling congregation numbers.

30 years ago

Feb. 17, 1988

Federal cuts had planning for upgrades at the ice rink taking a hit. Original plans for the ice rink at Mountain Trails Park on Wisconsin Avenue called for a covered and refrigerated rink at a cost of more than $215,000.

40 years ago

Feb. 16, 1978

Then the oldest private business in Whitefish, Stacey Oil Company hit its 45th anniversary. Opened by George Stacy in 1933, the service station sat at the corner of Second Street and Baker Avenue.

50 years ago

Feb. 15, 1968

Hoping to bring more snow before Winter Carnival, Whitefish held a “Snow Ball.” The dance was “designed to placate the fussiest appetite of the ancient Nordic gods that controlled the winter,” the Pilot wrote, and the dance featured an old fashioned snake dance and some sort of sacrifice.
