The Great Recession was having its effects in Montana. Foreclosures were up 400 percent in the Valley over the previous year, and residential sales in Whitefish decreased 26 percent in the second half of the year.

Dec. 24, 1998

Whitefish residents were divided on their feelings toward President Bill Clinton, after the House of Representatives passed a vote on impeachment and Clinton made the call to attack Iraq. “Who cares? He’s doing a good job for the country,” one woman said, while another said, “I think he should either resign or be impeached.”

30 years ago

Dec. 28, 1988

A pair of youths who blew up a mailbox were caught with the oldest trick in the book. Whitefish police arrested two boys, 14 and 15, for criminal mischief after following their tracks in the snow.

40 years ago

Dec. 28, 1978

Whitefish residents enjoyed a quiet Christmas without the constant buzzing of the television – or any other electronics. A power failure that affected all of Whitefish, Big Mountain, Happy Valley and areas west of Montana 40 shut off power for two hours on Christmas morning.

50 years ago

Dec. 26, 1968

Young readers of “Jack and Jill” magazine nationwide got a look into Whitefish and its skiing. Published author Timothy Rice, 7, got a five-page article and color photos in the magazine for a story.
