Whitefish was looking at a much whiter Christmas than it is this year, as a winter storm blanketed the state. Aided by 50-mph winds, the temperature at Whitefish Mountain Resort’s summit even reached minus 64 degrees.

Dec. 17, 1998

Whitefish was set to host Olympic gold medalist and world-record holder Eric Bergoust, as he would be training on Big Mountain’s freestyle jump hill during his holiday break. Bergoust won a gold medal in the freestyle aerial event in the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

30 years ago

Dec. 21, 1988

Big Mountain Resort was looking good heading into the holiday season, with a 23 percent increase in lodging bookings. Those visiting would be greeted by plentiful snow as well, with nine inches falling at the start of the week.

40 years ago

Dec. 21, 1978

Whitefish law enforcement and local business owners were at odds as the city looked into a dance curfew, disallowing anyone from cutting loose after midnight at the town’s bars and clubs. One club owner called the measure ridiculous, noting his customers “don’t start to come until midnight.”

50 years ago

Dec. 19, 1968

Christmas came early for Whitefish’s Volunteer Fire Department, which added a shiny new fire truck to its fleet. The truck was valued at $34,000 and paid for through rural fire contracts and other fire department income sources.
