What would become the Whitefish Trail got a huge boost in funding thanks to local philanthropist Michael Goguen. Goguen donated $3.1 million to the project, which hoped to create an 80-mile trail system circling around Whitefish Lake.

Dec. 3, 1998

More than 1,300 skiers flocked to Big Mountain for opening day. Snowfall had averaged four inches every 24 hours for the entire week leading up to the season’s start, and Chairs 1, 3, 5 and 7 all opened for skiing.

Dec. 7, 1988

The old Hanging Tree Bar on Central Avenue got a facelift and completed its transformation into the Cadillac bar and restaurant. The Cadillac was made to resemble the look of a place one would find in California or Miami, the owner said.

Dec. 7, 1978

A group of angry senior citizens gathered to protest the location for a proposed low-cost elderly housing project. The project was proposed to be about 10 blocks from the downtown and would make walking into town too difficult for residents.

Dec. 5, 1968

The State Department of Public Instruction wanted an explanation for no-shows at Whitefish Schools. Records showed 7,496 days of absences at the high school, about 12 percent of the school year.
