The “doughnut” case continued on, this time with a denial of Whitefish’s motion by the Montana Supreme Court. The city was trying to retain planning and zoning authority over the two-mile “doughnut” area around city limits.

Aug. 6, 1998

It was a beary scary week for some Whitefish residents. Visitors to the Kiddie Park found a black bear hanging out in a tree. A group of about 50 people crowded around to look at the bear before it fled down the river, later being captured and released elsewhere. Then former state senator and representative Bob Brown found himself treed by a charging grizzly near Spring Creek. Brown was not hurt.

30 years ago

Aug. 10, 1988

It was a busy week in Glacier National Park. First, a black bear was killed after charging rangers near the Ole Creek Campground. The bear had eaten human food and chased trail crew volunteers out of the area the day before. Then the next day, a 17-year-old girl from Alberta was injured while parasailing on Lake McDonald.

40 years ago

Aug. 17, 1978

Three days before the state deadline, the city of Whitefish decided on its roughly $1.5 million budget for fiscal year 1978-79. For reference, the city this year is looking at a $42 million budget.

50 years ago

Aug. 8, 1968

While Whitefish only saw .56 of an inch of rain in July, it was a wet month compared to the year prior, which only got .08 an inch of rain. Twenty-one of the 31 days in the month were clear, and just a dash of clouds filled the sky in the remaining days of the dry month.
