Twins battle for regional title

The Twins finally met their match Monday night, falling to the Bitterroot Red Sox 4-2 in the American Legion Northwest Class A Regional Baseball Tournament.

As of press time, the Twins were set to take on the winner of the Red Sox vs. Cody game for the regional championship Tuesday night.

Despite beating the Sox in hits seven to five, the Twins gave up three runs in the second inning and another in the fifth.

Glacier scored twice in the second inning as well, but couldn’t mount the comeback necessary to take the win.

Forrest Kobelt led the team with two hits in his three trips to the plate.

Terek Bistodeau was the losing pitcher, allowing five hits in five innings and notching one strikeout.

The loss ends a 25-game win streak, which included six straight wins over the Sox.

Head coach Scott Murray said overall, it wasn’t a bad game on his side.

“We played a good game. Had a couple errors that cost us dearly, but Bistodeau pitched really well,” he said. “The Red Sox, they held their ace for us last night. That was an important game for them to win, and they just played better baseball.”

Earlier in the tournament the Twins strung together some blowout victories.

Glacier took down the Hyrum Trappers 12-2, the Burley Green Sox 12-2 and the Cody Cubs 18U 13-2 to open the tournament.

Looking ahead to the championship game, Murray told the Pilot only minor tweaks were needed to prepare for either team.

“We need to get our bunts down, we had a couple times where we could’ve moved runners and we couldn’t get it done. That hurt,” he said. “Other than that, I think we just keep doing what we’re doing.”

Murray said Coby Clark-Dickenson, the team’s ace, will be on the mound for the title game.

“We’re going to be playing with our best guy, so we’ll just see what the outcome is,” he said.

Glacier (41-16) turned a lackluster season start into an exceptional summer of baseball this year, culminating in their 25-game win streak, league, divisional and state titles as well as a shot for the regional championship.

Murray said he owes this year’s success to all the kids that take the field.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the guys I coach. They’re great individuals, they work hard, they put in long hours through rain, snow, mud and the hot weather now,” he said.

“Nothing phases them. That’s life, whatever bumps in the road you have you’ve got to get over it, and that’s how these guys are with baseball.”
