South Course opens this week

| April 24, 2018 2:06 PM

Course Opening Busy

The North Course at Whitefish Lake Golf Club opened on Friday, April 20 to a crowd of eager golfers. Tee times ran from the first available time at 10 a.m. straight through until nearly 6 p.m. that evening. Golfers found the course in remarkable conditions considering that some snow still remained in the shaded areas, but the greens and tees were in fantastic condition.

The South Course should open this week as the warm weather helps get it dry and our greens crew has time to set up the course and clean-up winter debris. Tee times will continue to be taken at 8:45 a.m. each day until the first of May.

Equitable Handicap

Maintenance

If you are going to participate in tournaments or official events, where handicaps are used, it is essential that you enter ALL your scores including casual rounds and tournament scores. The staff and handicap committee are going to actively monitor scores to make sure they are entered into the computerized system in the Golf Shop. Scores that are entered need to be adjusted appropriately as well to make sure your handicap is accurate. The committee reserves the right to adjust handicaps for players that consistently score outside the parameters of their established handicaps.

Bunker Shot Tips

One of the problems players have playing from the sand is not applying enough acceleration of the club through the shot. Swinging your hands and arms will not produce enough speed through the sand to knock the sand and ball out. When you have a bunker shot, turn your shoulders as close to 90 degrees as possible on the backswing to generate power for the club to fire through the sand. The entry point into the sand behind the ball determines how far the ball will fly, so on shorter shots take more sand. The best approach may be to simply avoid the bunker in the first place, however that doesn’t happen even with the Pros. Another tip is not try to lift the ball out of the bunker but to swing down through the sand and let the club hit the shot up and out.
