The debate over drug testing student athletes continued to fill public forums and school meetings, with no consensus in site. Seventy people filed into a board meeting to voice their opinions, which ranged from wanting mandatory testing for all student athletes to wanting the school to have nothing to do with it.

April 23, 1998

The winter of 1997-98 was the worst in a decade for the Big Mountain Ski Resort. Third quarter revenue saw a drop of 7.4 percent compared to the prior year, about $5.3 million, likely due to the weak Canadian dollar and the effects of El NiƱo.

30 years ago

April 27, 1988

Four inches of snow dropped on April 25, though it melted by mid-day, and the base area of Big Mountain saw six inches.

40 years ago

April 27, 1978

In order to comply with federal Title IX regulations against sexual discrimination, the school district announced it would be starting a competitive girls volleyball team within the year. Under investigation by federal officials, the school board was told a month earlier it must add a girls sport or lose all financial federal support.

50 years ago

April 25, 1968

An odd winter on Big Mountain concluded on April 21. The resort opened three weeks later than planned and failed to reach the 100-inch mark at the summit until April. For reference, the resort this year was 376 inches by March 26.
