To nobody’s surprise in hindsight, a report in 2008 concluded builders and developers were not meeting the demand for affordable housing in Whitefish. In 2007, only 12 homes and 11 condominiums sold in the price range deemed affordable, $187,000 for a moderate income household.

20 years ago

April 16, 1998

A natural gas leak “like none ever seen in the region” erupted on Fifth Street between Baker and Central Avenue, forcing residents to evacuated their homes. Specialized workers, some from as far away as Butte, had to come to Whitefish to fix the leak.

30 years ago

April 20, 1988

A group of misfits broke into the Whitefish Armory and stole a National Guard truck from the premises. However, they managed to get the truck stuck in the mud and had to abandon it.

40 years ago

April 20, 1978

Heading into the future — President of Winter Sports Inc. Ed Schenck announced a $1 million expansion program for the Big Mountain Ski Resort. The improvements included a new triple chairlift leading up to the North Bowl and new grooming equipment.

50 years ago

April 18, 1968

An odd rumor concerning the cleanliness of carpets in the new Muldown school was circulating through the community. It was rumored that the state health department had deemed carpeting in the school as unsanitary. Principal Bill Elliott said the rumors were groundless.
