A new plan for mandatory drug testing at Whitefish schools brewed controversy. After seeing an increase in drug and alcohol use at the high school level, a proposed policy would have students go through preseason and random drug testing in order to participate in sports.

April 2, 1998

Never too early for fire season – the Whitefish Volunteer Fire Department responded to a two-acre fire off Farm To Market Road. A controlled burn became out of control and caught a field of grass.

30 years ago

April 6, 1988

It was announced that Lloyd “Mully” Muldown would join the Montana Coaches Hall of Fame for his more than 58 years of coaching in Whitefish. Muldown started coaching basketball and track in the 1930s, leading the boys basketball team to several District 13 championships between 1930 and 1938. Muldown also helped organize skiing on Big Mountain and coached repeated state title teams in the 1950s.

40 years ago

April 6, 1978

A string of vehicle vandalism struck Whitefish. At least 25 vehicles reported flat tires, cars covered in oil and interiors damaged overnight.

50 years ago

April 4, 1968

Contrary to the old adage, the Pilot in 1968 wrote “March came and went like a lamb.” The month’s high temperature was 60 degrees and only a trace of snow fell during the pleasant month.
