Sports resume schedule following cancelations
Recent threats made to Whitefish and other area schools led to the cancellation of athletic events and Whitefish’s homecoming last week. Homecoming celebrations will resume on Thursday, Oct. 5 and Friday, Oct. 6, with the presentation of court and king and queen during the Oct. 6 football game against Polson.
Football
The Bulldogs (0-3) were set to take on Corvallis at Memorial Field Friday night in an inter-conference homecoming matchup.
That game will not be rescheduled.
Whitefish will head to Browning this week to take on the Indians (1-3) in a Northwest A conference showdown. Last week Browning fell to Frenchtown 42-16.
That game will be played at 7 p.m. on Friday.
Volleyball
Whitefish volleyball (2-1) was slated to take on the rival Columbia Falls Wildkats (2-2) on Thursday before that match was canceled.
That game has been rescheduled for Sept. 26.
This week they hosted Ronan on Tuesday after press time and will travel to Libby on Thursday for a rematch against the Lady Loggers.
Libby (6-0) took down the Lady Dogs in three sets last time the two teams faced off.
That game will start at 7:15 p.m. in Libby.
Soccer
Whitefish soccer managed to get one of their two scheduled matches in last week, with both the boys and the girls picking up big wins against Columbia Falls on Tuesday.
The boys (4-1) took down the Wildcats (1-2) 3-2 behind goals from Same Menicke, Casey Schneider and Marvin Kimera.
Tied 1-1 at the half, Whitefish netted two big goals early in the second half to take the lead. Columbia Falls’ Jakob Grein scored with 9 minutes to play, but Whitefish’s defense held on for the win.
Goalkeeper Colton Upton had 8 saves for the Dogs.
The Whitefish girls (2-4) also pulled through in a close match against the Wildkats (2-1) Tuesday.
Also tied 1-1 at the half, Grace Benkelman scored the go-ahead goal with three minutes to go. Benkelman also assisted Whitefish’s first goal, scored by Anna Cook.
Sami Galbraith had 16 saves for the Lady Dogs.
Both the boys and the girls were scheduled to host Bigfork on Saturday to close out homecoming week.
No makeup date has been scheduled for those games.
This week the Bulldogs will head down to Polson for a matchup with the Pirates on Saturday. The boys will play at 7 p.m. and the girls at 5 p.m.
They’ll get a rematch with Columbia Falls on Tuesday at Columbia Falls as well. Boys play at 7 p.m. and girls at 5 p.m. for those matches.
Cross Country
Whitefish runners saw the cancellation of the Polson-hosted Mission Shadow Duels.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to compete in Thompson Falls on Thursday and then will host their home race, the Whitefish Invitational, at the Whitefish Lake Golf Club on Tuesday, Sept. 26.
Races will be on the south course, with high school boys at 3 p.m., high school girls at 3:45 p.m., middle school boys at 4:30 p.m. and middle school girls at 5 p.m. Ten teams from western Montana are expected to compete.
Golf
Whitefish golfers got a chance to compete last week at the Frenchtown Invitational Wednesday before canceling day two of the tournament on Thursday.
The Lady Bulldogs earned another first place finish, edging out Polson by seven strokes for the win.
Gracie Young took second, just one stroke behind Courtney Ockler’s 90. Ella Shaw (104) and Megan Archibald (106) took seventh and eighth for Whitefish as well.
The Bulldogs took fourth overall behind Hamilton, Polson and Stevensville.
Cameron Kahle finished with a 79 for fifth and Andrew Brozek took ninth with an 83.
Whitefish had their matchup with Hamilton on Saturday. This week they’ll head to Hamilton for the Western A Divisional tournament on Saturday.
