Mayor honors two nonprofits for going 'extra mile'
Whitefish Mayor John Muhlfeld is honoring two nonprofits recognizing the work they do to go the “extra mile” in the community.
Muhlfeld recently proclaimed Nov. 1 as Extra Mile day in honor of North Valley Music School and the Whitefish Review. Muhlfeld and City Council members presented the award to representatives of each organization.
“Whitefish is a community which encourages its citizens to maximize their personal contribution to the community by giving of themselves wholeheartedly and with total effort, commitment, and conviction to their individual ambitions, family, friends, and community,” Muhlfeld said.
Thus, he said, Whitefish is also a community that chooses to celebrate individuals and organizations that “go the extra mile” in order to make a difference.
North Valley Music School, which began 20 years ago, works to provide music education for all ages. The city acknowledged the work of the school’s executive director, Deidre Corson, its board members, faculty and staff.
“North Valley Music School has provided over 100,000 private lessons, over 6,000 Music Together classes, and served hundreds of kids through children’s choir, summer camps, youth orchestras, and other youth programs,” Muhlfeld said.
The Whitefish Review is a nonprofit literary journal founded in 2006 and has received national recognition for its interviews with authors, artists and entertainers along with providing an opportunity for both professional and up and coming writers to publish their work.
Whitefish Review founders include Brian Schott, editor-in-chief; Mike Powers; Ryan Friel; Lyndsay Schott; and Ian Griffiths.
“Whitefish Review seeks to inspire and promote a more sustainable world through the power of some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes,” Muhlfeld said. “Whitefish Review has become a popular destination for community members to gather and share an evening of essays, readings, and poetry, adding immensely to the culture of Whitefish.”
