A competitive showing at the Class A State Track Meet in Laurel put the finishing touches on a solid season for the Bulldogs.

Sprinter Lauren Schulz was the highlight for Whitefish, grabbing second in the 200 (26.77), fourth in the 100 (13.45) and fourth in the 400 (1:00.24).

For the boys, a fifth place finish in the 1,600 relay (3:30.95) was the performance of the meet. Lee Walburn also picked up sixth in the long jump (20-10 1/4) and Alex Barker took sixth in high jump (6-2).

“The overall highlight is that we gained a whole bunch of experience as the kids put it on the line race after race,” head coach Derek Schulz said. “We were very competitive, even though it may not show up in the papers as much as far as points scored.”

Schulz said he’s happy with how the season turned out.

“These kids were fantastic to work with. We had a high number of kids from our school out for track. They were good kids, our coaches had a good time working with them,” he said. “They gave all they had all the time, and there’s nothing more we can ask than that.”

As far as offseason training goes, Schulz said he wants to see his athletes getting after it in other sports, knowing they’ll be ready to race when spring rolls around next year.

“My philosophy is always that I want to see these kids in other sports. I believe in the multi-sport athlete, so that’s what I want them to do. Contribute to their school and the other programs here,” he said.
