Holdhusen wins singles, Dogs take second at divisional
The Bulldogs came out of the Western A divisional tournament in Polson with a second place finish behind some strong individual performances.
Polson took the divisional title with 61 points overall. Whitefish grabbed second with 26.
Eric Holdhusen was the singles champion, taking down Polson’s Collin Kenney in a heated finals matchup. Kenney had previously bested Holdhusen twice in the season.
“He just got into a real battle with him in the championship and just played really well and pulled it out,” head coach Chris Schwaderer said. “He did exactly what he had to do to win. It was really stressful to watch, but it was a lot of fun.”
Ethan Potthoff took third in singles as well.
The duo of Brendan Buls and Thomas Carloss finished second in the doubles bracket, racking up their first loss of the year in a surprising finals matchup.
“I think that hopefully made them a little bit hungry for state,” Schwaderer said. “I think they were undefeated as a team, so to lose that last match, I think they might want to set the record straight at state.”
Holdhusen, Potthoff, Buls and Carloss will face the final test at the state tournament on Thursday and Friday at FVCC, which Whitefish is hosting.
There’s not much to change at this point, Schwaderer said, but he and assistant coach Jay Stagg have been getting on the courts with their doubles team to give them some new looks.
“We have been trying to stay loose, stay focused. We’ve been having some intense matches and doing a lot of playing during the week. We’re trying to give them as many different looks as we can, because they’re going to get a lot of different looks at state,” he said.
Overall, Schwaderer said it’s hard not to be proud of what his team did this season.
“I think we had a really successful year, and I’m really happy with what our kids did,” he said. “We had a wide range of playing levels, some kids with a lot of experience and kids who are really new to the game. I think that even though we didn’t win, we had a lot of progress. I’m already excited thinking about the future.”
