Whitefish qualified 30 athletes for the Class A State Track Meet over the weekend at the divisional meet in Corvallis.

As a team, both the girls and boys finished fifth overall.

“I feel like our kids were ready to go in almost every area,” head coach Derek Schulz said. “We’re really excited.”

The boys were led by a huge day for Tyler Cote, who qualified in the 100, 200, 400 and 1,600 relay. Cote took third in both the 100 (11.42) and 200 (23.44).

Lee Walburn took fourth in the 300 hurdles with a 42.51, and the 1,600 relay team took second with 3:30.38.

On the girls side, Lauren Schulz qualified for five events — the 100, 200, 400 and both relays. Schulz took fourth in the 100 (12.76) and third in the 200 (26.52).

Ella Greenberg had an equally strong day, qualifying for the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. Greenberg took sixth in the 800 (2:27.09) and fifth in the 3,200 (12.:26.51).

Whitefish took third in the 1,600 relay with a time of 4:12.00.

As his team looks ahead to the state track meet in Laurel on Friday and Saturday, Schulz said the primary focus is on resting and being mentally prepared.

“The hard work is done. The mental prep and physical preparation in terms of rest and nutrition, those are the things we’re focused on this week. You don’t run yourself into better condition this week,” he said. “Our goal will be to compete even better and see what happens.”
