Broadway stars teach summer camp

| May 23, 2017 4:28 PM

This summer students will have the opportunity to learn vocal technique from one of the stars of Broadway’s Les Miserables, tap dance from a New York City Rockette, and acting technique from a five-time Broadway actor.

Alpine Theatre Project will be conducting its first-ever Broadway Summer Training Camp for students in grades five through 12. The camp will run July 17-Aug. 5, culminating in two performances of the 20s-era musical comedy, “Thoroughly Modern Millie Jr.” Placement auditions will be held on Sunday, June 4 at 2 p.m. at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center.

“There’s nothing like this in the entire state of Montana,” says ATP Co-Founder and Camp Director, Luke Walrath. “We’re excited to offer students the chance to learn performance technique from an entire roster of Broadway professionals.”

During the three-week intensive, students will be mentored by Alpine Theatre Project’s professional summer company in singing, dancing, and acting, as they work on a one-hour version of the Tony Award winning musical comedy, “Thoroughly Modern Millie.”

Students will meet Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with a half hour lunch break at the Whitefish Performing Arts Center.

The professional summer company includes artists who have appeared in a number of Broadway productions. Broadway Summer Training Camp mentors include: Amelia Cormack, Broadway’s “Kinky Boots”; Nyssa Duchow, “Once National Tour”; Mike Eldred, Broadway’s “Les Miserables” and “The Civil War”; Eric Michael Krop, Broadway’s “Godspell”; Betsi Morrison, Broadway’s “The Sound of Music”; N’Kenge, Broadway’s “Motown”; Dan Sharkey, Broadway’s “The Music Man” and “Amazing Grace”; Soara-Joye Ross, Broadway’s “Les Miserables” and “Dance of the Vampires”; Rebecca Spear: “Forbidden Broadway” national tour; Becky Stout, former Radio City Rockette; and Luke Walrath, Broadway’s “42nd Street.”

Auditions will determine casting within the production. Students are encouraged to register ahead of the audition date to receive the material used at the auditions.

The camp is presented by Don K Subaru. Tuition for the three-week camp is $300 with some scholarship assistance available.
