The Whitefish boys tennis team closed out the regular season with a dominating 7-0 win over Stevensville on Saturday.

“It was a good way to finish out the regular season, on an up note,” head coach Chris Schwaderer said of his team. “More than anything, what stood out to me is that a lot of the guys seems a little bit more relaxed. Some of our previous matches, the guys got a little tight and tried to play a style that wasn’t theirs. I think the match Saturday was an opportunity for the guys to take a little more control, and when they do that they just look a lot more relaxed and confident.”

Earlier in the week Whitefish fell to Polson 5-2. Noah Fauth and the duo of Brendan Buls and Thomas Carloss picked up the two wins for Whitefish.

Next up for the Bulldogs is the divisional tournament in Polson and Ronan. As of press time, the teams are set to play on Tuesday and Wednesday, but an ominous forecast from the week may push that back.

Schwaderer said that from what he’s seen of the bracket, everything seems to point to a battle between his team and Polson.

“Whitefish and Polson players are on a collision course,” he said. “We’re going to have to beat them, and they’re going to have to beat us. It’s just going to be a great tournament.”

Getting ahead early is the key to success for the Bulldogs, Schwaderer said, noting that even his higher-seeded players with a first round bye need to be ready for anything.

“We’re gonna have to be fast starters. We want to start strong. We don’t want to end in the losers bracket and have to climb our way out,” he said.
