Boys tennis making gains despite tough weekend
The Bulldogs got a full weekend of tennis in, falling in close duals against Hamilton and Corvallis on Friday before competing in the Bitterroot Invitational on Saturday.
Whitefish dropped both duals 4-3 on Friday, but head coach Chris Schwaderer said he saw his team improving on the court regardless of the outcome.
“I always like the Bitterroot, it’s just one of those weekends where we kind of turn the corner,” Schwaderer said. “A lot of tennis is played. I think we made a lot of gains.”
Eric Holdhusen and Mark Anderson picked up big singles wins against Corvallis while Kyiah Ingraham and Zach Meadows grabbed the Dogs’ sole doubles victory.
Against Hamilton, Holdhusen came up short against Alex Raymond, whom Schwaderer regards as one of the best in the state.
“Hamilton’s No. 1 is probably the favorite to win state,” he said. “Although [Holdhusen] lost, I thought he looked really good. I feel like he’s making big improvements as our No 1.”
While he’s happy with the effort he got from his team over the weekend, Schwaderer said finishing points is the priority this week.
“We had some opportunities to finish points. When you’re given balls at the net, you’re given one shot and you’ve got to put things away, and I feel like we extended a lot of points by not putting points away,” he said. “We just need to be a little bit more able to close and finish, if we can do that it’ll put us in a good spot.”
The Bulldogs have another busy week ahead of them. On Tuesday after press time they faced off against Libby in a makeup match after the original dual was rained out. On Thursday Whitefish takes on Columbia Falls at FVCC at 11:30 a.m., and on Saturday they’ll face Hamilton and Corvallis again. Both duals will be at FVCC, with Whitefish taking on Hamilton at 11 a.m. and Corvallis at 3 p.m.
