Twins crowned champs at Ed Gallo Tournament
The Glacier Twins were named champions of the Ed Gallo Memorial Tournament over the weekend, keeping the hot streak alive and looking strong heading into the final weeks of the season.
Glacier had a 3-0 lead heading into the sixth inning against Calgary in the championship game Sunday, but allowed runs by the Redbirds A in the sixth and seventh for a tight 3-2 score. Despite having the tying run on second, the Twins forced a fly ball to center to seal the victory and take home gold.
Ryan Veneman was the winning pitcher on the day, racking up five scoreless innings on the mound with six strikeouts. At the plate, Terek Bistodeau (1-4) drove in Gunner Marsh for the first run, and James Sampson-Keck drove in Bistodeau twice for Glacier’s other two runs.
“The boys played well, we had some good close ballgames and came out ahead. It was fun,” head coach Scott Murray said. “Holding a good team to two runs, we did well.”
The Twins faced off against the Redbirds earlier in the weekend in one of the highlight games of the tournament. Down 2-1 going into the seventh, a Ryan Veneman sacrifice tied the game up for the Twins. In extra innings, a Jack Schwaiger single drove home the winning run with two outs for the comeback victory.
Tyler Murphy pitched seven innings, allowing three hits and two unearned runs, and Coby Clark-Dickenson pitched a perfect eighth inning to get the win on the mound.
The Twins also took down the Havre NorthStars 5-0 on Saturday, but fell to Volkswagen of Olympia 5-4 in the night game. Clark-Dickenson was the highlight of the Havre matchup, striking out nine with just two hits on the mound over 5 2/3 innings as well as nailing a huge 2-run homer in the fifth.
On Sunday morning the Twins also took down the Kalispell B team 8-2 before preparing for the championship.
Murray praised his pitchers as the big keys to Glacier’s success this weekend.
“Probably the biggest [highlight] was our pitching staff,” Murray said. “They did a great job, Murphy, Veneman, Clark-Dickenson.”
The Twins have another full week of baseball ahead of them. Tonight they’ll take on The Lakers A team at home before taking the two-game series to Kalispell on Thursday. On Saturday they’ll host the Libby Loggers for a seven-inning doubleheader, and on Sunday they’ll head down to the Bitterroot to take on the Bitterroot Red Sox.
“We need to bunt better, but I think we solved that [Monday],” he said. “We are working on base running today and trying to read pitchers. I think if we can do those three things, I think we’ll be OK. We have a shot to make some noise in the district and state tournament.”
