Summer season begins at art studio
The summer season at Stumptown Art Studio has kicked off with a group exhibition, “Wildflowers: Variations on a Theme.” A showcasing of many well-known local artists, each has expressed the theme “Wildflowers” in their own creative and artistic styles. These unique works of art can be enjoyed by all ages and are on display through July 2 at the studio.
Coinciding with the “Wildflower” theme is an upcoming workshop by Nancy Seiler, “Montana Native Plants” poster artist. The first is “Nature Journaling: Native Plants” on June 26, from 1-4 p.m. at the Center for Native Plants. Later this summer she will teach classes in drawing butterflies on July 24 and landscapes in the nature journaling format on Aug. 28.
Adults have a great variety of art adventures to choose from every summer.
Watercolor artist Kim Shirley is back with Art Treks, three guided outdoor watercolor sessions at the City Beach Pavilion on July 12, July 26 and Aug. 9.
Glass fusing workshops take place once-a-month with a different project theme for each. Pendants are the topic for July 12 and candle-bent stringer designs are the Aug. 9 project.
Guest artist Malinda Goldhirsch is back to teach two of her precious metal clay introductory workshops, one on July 20 and one on Aug. 17. PMC is a clay-like material, which is molded, stamped and textured, then fired with a butane torch and transformed into a 99% silver piece of jewelry.
Returning guest artist Dennis Johnson from Palm Dessert together with his wife Joan Black teaching an unusual monotype workshop. Images are made using a variety of material pressed into the inked plate to create texture and/or color. The image on the plate is then transferred to paper by hand or a printing process. This can be a very improvised, spontaneous and interesting process, all taking place the evening of Thursday, Aug. 24.
The usual favorites continue throughout the summer: Canvas & Cocktails on June 23, July 14 and Aug. 4 as well as Wild Women Wednesdays on June 21, July 19 and Aug. 16 and the Cultural and Art History Club on July 11 and Aug. 8. For details on all of the summer offerings please visit the web site at www.stumptownartstudio.org.
A full schedule of art camps for youths run all summer long. There is something for every age group, and young artists are able to explore the many different types of art forms and materials. Some camps are five days, some two to three days and all of the instructors have fun and exciting plans for their camps.
