Murphy tosses no-hitter during weekend sweep
A no-hitter by Tyler Murphy on Sunday added to the Glacier Twins’ 10-game winning streak in impressive fashion.
Murphy struck out nine in the first of two seven-inning games against the Mission Valley Mariners to secure the 4-0 win. Just four walks and an error separated Murphy from a perfect game.
The Twins won the second game against the Mariners 9-1 behind some strong plate appearances from Tom Hellwig (2-4), Terek Bistodeau (1-2) and James Sampson-Keck (2-3 and a triple).
Earlier in the weekend the Twins swept the Cranbrook Bandits A club 11-1 and 13-5 in the two games. Two five-run innings in the sixth and seventh broke open what had been a tight game for the Twins in game one, and the hot bats continued into the five-run first inning and four-run second of game two of the day. Ryan Veneman went 4-5 with a triple, double and RBI in the second game.
After a five-game losing skid in late May, the Twins are now hitting their stride going into the second half of their schedule, having won 10 straight by a combined score of 113-15.
This weekend the Twins will host the 28th Annual Ed Gallo Memorial Wood Bat Baseball Tournament from Thursday through Sunday. The tournament, hosted by the Glacier Twins and American Legion Roosevelt Post 108 of Whitefish, began in 1990 and is dedicated to the memory of Ed Gallo, a longtime supporter of the Twins program.
This year’s tournament consists of 10 teams in two pools. In pool A are the Twins A, the Havre NorthStars, the VW of Olympia/Capital, the Scobey Blues, and the Calgary Redbirds. In pool B are the Twins B, the Kalispell Lakers B, the Glacier League 15 year old All Stars, the Lethbridge Lakers and the Mission Valley Mariners B.
The Twins will face off against Scobey at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday and Calgary at 8:30 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday they’ll take on Havre at 10:30 a.m. and Olympia/Capital at 8:30 p.m. The Twins B team will play Mission Valley at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Lethbridge at 8 a.m. on Friday, Kalispell at 6 p.m. Friday and Glacier League at 6 p.m. Saturday.
The top two teams in each pool will face off on Sunday, June 25 to decide a champion.
Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for seniors and students for each game, while children age 12 and under get in free. Full passes for the entire tournament are also available for purchase.
