Lavena James used this drawing as part of a letter saying why it’s good to recycle.

Sara Miller’s third grade class at Muldown Elementary School recently completed a persuasive writing unit. “We chose to write about causes that we are passionate about and that we want to see changed,” she said. “We hope you enjoy our writing and we persuade you to side with us.”

The class submitted its letters to the Pilot and a few came with colorful drawings.

Endangered pangolins

We need to stop killing pangolins. We need to stop killing pangolins because they are very endangered. One reason they are so endangered is they are the most illegally traded animal on the planet. Another reason we need to stop killing pangolins is some pangolins are already about to go extinct. We need to stop killing pangolins because humans already wiped out a species of pangolin. Another reason we need to stop killing is the termite and ant population would get too high. If pangolins go extinct there will be too many termites and ants. We need to stop killing pangolins.

Bengal tigers

I think people should stop hunting Bengal tigers. Did you know that there are only 5,000 left in the wild? Bengal tigers are losing their habitat from people cutting down their forests. Did you know that in the 1940s, Bengal tigers have lost many of their forest habitat? People cut down trees just for paper and stuff, and tigers need trees. Hunters are killing Bengal tiger’s prey. Hunters have been hunting Bengal tiger’s deer and antelope. Tigers need their prey. I believe that people should stop hunting Bengal tigers and their prey.

Manatees

I think that we should help save manatees. One reason is that manatees were endangered is because of people. For example, manatees were endangered because of fishing lines and fishing nets and they were dying because of them. Also, people were building homes where they live. For example, when they build homes by the water the manatees have to go away from that area. Another reason is that some people hunted them for their meat and other parts of their body. For example, laws in the 1970s made it illegal to kill manatees. So that is why I think we should stop harming them and we should continue to help protect manatees!

Recycling

We need to recycle! If we don’t recycle bad things will happen. One thing that could happen is that there will be toxic air. If we don’t recycle it could hurt animals too and it can pollute the water that animal drink and swimming, and plants won’t grow. Some animals can die or go extinct. There are over 3,000 landfills in the U.S. I can’t imagine how many landfills there will be because 7.125 billion people on earth that’s 31.2 billion pounds of trash a day. Those are just a few reason why we should recycle.

Stop texting and driving

Here are some reasons you should not text and drive. Every day over eight people are killed from texting and driving and there are 1,161 injuries. Every year 421,000 people are injured and over 300,000 accidents are caused by texting and driving. Another reason why is over 1.6 million cars have crashed from people looking at their phones while they are driving. You can also get a $400 fine for texting and driving in some places. So please don’t text and drive!

Stop texting and driving

I think we should stop texting and driving. One reason why is currently 44 states have banned texting and driving. For example, 1,161 people die because of texting and driving. My next reason is studies say that taking their eyes off the road for 4.6 seconds. For example, eight people die a day because of texting and driving. My last reason is in 2010 about 3,100 people died. For example, you can die at a young age and that is why you should not text and drive. People of Whitefish, please don’t text and drive!

Stop texting and driving

I think people should stop texting and driving. One reason is there are 1.6 million crashes caused by texting and driving each year. Texting and driving is dangerous. Texting and driving takes the driver’s eyes off the road for about 5 seconds. Teens who text and drive spend 10 percent outside of their lane and 40 percent of teens say they have been in a car when the driver was texting. Texting makes a crash up to 23 times more likely. About 600,000 people text behind the wheel of an automobile. Please don’t text and drive!

Save the rainforest

Please help save the rainforests. If you don’t save the rainforest it will disappear. If you don’t save the rainforest we can’t eat chocolate because it comes from the rainforest. Reason two, many things come from the rainforest. Did you know the rainforest is disappearing 4,000 football fields in an hour? Here is my last reason, the rainforest has plants that make medicine. This is my last reason, the amazon rainforest is half of the United States, if it keeps getting trashed it won’t be there anymore. That’s why we should save the rainforest.

Stop texting and driving

Do you want to get injured or maybe even die? No? Then you shouldn’t text while driving. One reason why you shouldn’t text while driving is that a lot of people die from it. In fact, about 421,000 people get injured because of it each year. Another reason is that texting while driving is more dangerous than driving while you’re drunk. It is also more dangerous than driving with drugs. One more reason is that kids might be in the car. They can get injured too. That is why I believe that you shouldn’t text while driving.
