British Open
What a phenomenal finish to this year’s Open tournament at Royal Birkdale with Jordan Spieth averting total disaster then responding to claim his third different Major Championship. His poise and mental toughness was unbelievable when the wheels could have rocketed off his round. Using the rules of golf for an unplayable lie worked to his advantage, plus averting temporary obstructions like the service trailers showed his knowledge and understanding in the moment. He was allowed to go back as far as he would like while keeping the spot where the ball was found and flag in line. He could have returned to the tee, but then he would have had a long fourth shot into the green by doing so. His up and down for bogey was the turning point followed by birdie, eagle, and birdie, birdie to recapture the lead and put the hammer down. Matt Kuchar deserves every accolade possible for his patience during the 20-minute delay for Spieth to play his third shot. Kuchar had two birdies of his on during the final holes only to watch Spieth play spectacular golf in what may be the best finish ever in a major.
