ATP showcases new play reading series

| July 18, 2017 4:39 PM

Alpine Theatre Project and Great Northern Brewing Co. are presenting a new play reading series.

The series, which is evenings of relevant play readings held in unconventional spaces, runs over three Wednesday nights beginning July 19. ATP’s company of professional actors will read award-winning dramas in site-specific locations.

Admission is free of charge and limited based on seating capacity. The Great Northern Brewing Co. will have beer and wine available for purchase at the events.

“American Buffalo” by David Mamet is Wednesday, July 19 at 8 p.m. at the old Naturally Clean Dry Cleaners, 6348 Hwy 93 S.

In a Chicago junk shop three small time crooks plot to rob a man of his coin collection, the showpiece of which is a valuable “Buffalo nickel.” These high-minded grifters fancy themselves businessmen pursuing legitimate free enterprise. But the reality of the three- Donny, the oafish junk shop owner; Bobby, a young junkie Donny has taken under his wing and “Teach”, a violently paranoid braggart is that they are merely pawns caught up in their own game of last-chance, dead-end, empty pipe dreams.

“Side Man” by Warren Leight is Wednesday, July 26 at 8 p.m. at The old Whitefish Handcrafted Spirits Distillery, 204 Wisconsin Ave.

Set in 1953 and traveling to 1985, this lovely and poignant memory play unfolds through the eyes of Clifford, the only son of Gene, a jazz trumpet player, and Terry, an alcoholic mother.

“Sleuth” by Anthony Shaffer is Wednesday, Aug. 2 at 8 p.m. The location is still to be determined.

The ultimate game of cat-and-mouse is played out in a cozy English country house owned by celebrated mystery writer, Andrew Wyke. Invited guest Milo Tindle, a young rival who shares not only Wyke’s love of the game but also his wife, has come to lay claim. Revenge is devised and murders plotted.
