Lady Fusion secure 14U title
The Flathead Lady Fusion won the Montana Amateur Hockey Association’s 14U Girls division championship Sunday in Havre.
The Fusion beat the Idaho Polar Bears, 4-3, in the championship game. The Fusion’s Mackenzie Baker put her team on the scoreboard with two unassisted goals early in the first period. The Polar Bear’s Kiera Butterfield answered with a goal off a Shelby Rupe assist, and Lindsay Todd tied the game assisted by Butterfield and Emmalynn Clevenger.
Fusion goaltender Courtney Klemann stopped 23 shots out of 26, and Polar Bears net minder Laci Moore saved 21 of 25.
Flathead retook the lead with a Maria Makman goal from a Nya Barber-Castro assist. Barber-Castro nailed the Fusion’s fourth goal.
Idaho’s Butterfield scored their team’s third goal short-handed from a Gracie Foutch assist.
The Polar Bears had six penalties and the Lady Fusion three.
In Friday night’s second game, the third-seeded Flathead Fusion met fifth seed Miles City Generals in pool play. The Fusion won the game 6-1.
The Fusion opened with a goal by Makman from a Maya Lacey assist.
Barber-Castro then scored with 1:52 remaining in the first period off of a Finley McCarthy assist. The Generals answered with a Maeghan Forsyth goal from a Rylee Brauer assist.
The Fusion had two goals in the second — Lacey unassisted at the start of the period, and Barber-Castro with an assist by McCarthy and Kyleigh Willis. Flathead finished the game with goals by Baker from an Elizabeth Spradlin assist, and a Finley McCarthy unassisted goal.
Both the Generals and the Fusion had three penalties in the game.
The Fusion met the Idaho Polar Bears in a Saturday morning matchup, wining the game 4-1.
Makman opened with a goal from a Willis and Barber-Castro assist, then Baker scored from a Katie Craig/Lacey assist early in the second. Moscow answered with a Jasmine Croyle goal from an Emmalynn Clevenger assist. Craig scored on a Baker assist, and Baker scored on an assist from linemate Spradlin to finish the second period.
Each team drew three penalties.
In semifinal action, the Fusion were first in the blue pool and crossed sticks with Glasgow Ice Dawgs, the second place red pool team. The won the matchup 9-6.
The Fusion took the lead with a McCarthy goal and Glasgow took it back with goals by Zoey Crater and Shanice Lagerquist, with Kylie Lagerquist assisting both. Flathead scored the next four goals: Grace Droskoski and Baker on Lexi Kersten assists, McCarthy unassisted, and Makman/Barber-Castro assist.
Glasgow’s Brooklyn Schmidt scored their third goal to open the third period followed by teammates Kylie Lagerquist (Klaire Krumweide assist), answered by the Fusion with a Craig goal from a Spradlin assist. Kylie Lagerquist scored another Glasgow goal from an Emma Cook pass.
Fusion linemates Droskoski/Makman/Barber-Castro added a goal followed by Lacey and Baker/McCarthy points. Ice Dawg Zoey Crater scored a final goal from a Tatum Provencher assist.
