Wrestlers take down Bigfork, Browning at home
Whitefish wrestlers defended their home turf with a pair of wins over Browning and Bigfork on Friday.
The Bulldogs hosted the two teams as part of Friday’s triangular.
Whitefish took down Browning in a close 39-36 dual before finishing the night with a 39-19 win over Bigfork.
A scoring error had head coach Ryan Boyle thinking his team absolutely needed a win out of 285-pounder Keegan Wold in the final match just to tie.
Despite the pressure on the first-year wrestler, Wold pulled through with the 7-5 win.
“We thought it’d come down to the last match and it did,” Boyle said. “We had some guys step up like Keegan, he just started wrestling this year. The score was wrong, but it was pretty cool to see him stepping up and doing a great job.”
Over the weekend the Bulldogs also wrestled at the Bob Kinney Classic in Superior.
Jackson Carson (103), Dakota Flannery (138) and Jack Eisenbath (145) took second in that tournament, and Nathan Sproul (103) and Nathan Buckley (120) took third.
“We were real close to placing a couple more,” Boyle said. “Overall we’re wrestling better, and a couple of those kids who had never placed before, they were either in the championship or the consolation championship.”
Boyle said so far in the early season, he’s been impressed with the attacking mentality his team is showing out on the mat.
“Even in Superior, we’re being more aggressive. Last year we were kind of sitting back and letting people dictate what we do. We’re being aggressive overall, and that’s what we like to see,” he said.
Whitefish wrestled Libby and Ronan on Tuesday night after presstime. On Friday and Saturday they’ll head to Coeur d’Alene for the Tri-State Invite.
