Nordic Club thanks Winter Sports for new trail easement

| August 1, 2017 4:17 PM

On behalf of Glacier Nordic Club and its membership, a huge thank you to Winter Sports Inc. for their generosity in granting a new recreational easement on Big Mountain for a trailhead and connector trail. This easement will provide much needed winter access to the existing Nordic trail network in Haskill Basin. Five years ago, Glacier Nordic Club began grooming the old trail network on WSI and Stoltze land. The new access trail will provide the public with easier access to these trails as well as the trails groomed by Iron Horse. With warming temperatures, this area provides more reliable snow coverage than available at the Glacier Nordic Center at the Whitefish Lake Golf Course. The new trailhead will be easy to find (right off Big Mountain Road), with dedicated parking and restroom facilities. A new access trail will provide less elevation change than the current access from the Base Lodge, making it accessible to more skiers. Glacier Nordic is excited to partner with Whitefish Legacy Partners on the new trailhead and access trail, sharing 50-50 in the approximate $100,000 cost. We will be grooming the new trail and contributing to winter trailhead maintenance as well. Thanks again, Winter Sports for granting this easement to improve access to the growing Nordic ski resources in Whitefish.
