Lady Bulldogs compete at Libby Invitational

The Lady Bulldog tennis team fared well with a young group at the Libby Invitational on Saturday.

While Whitefish didn’t have any winners in the tournament, head coach Patrick Dryden said he was happy to see strong play from both his experienced and inexperienced players.

Out of the 12 girls that went to the invitational, seven were freshmen.

“It was a pretty young group that we took over there. It was good to get them some varsity experience,” Dryden said.

Olivia Potthoff and Claire Carloss had strong showing in their singles brackets, but lost close second round matches to the eventual champions.

Seniors Hannah Madsen and Paint Intasuk got off to a slow start in the No. 1-2 singles bracket but rallied to win their next two and meet in the consolation championship, which Madsen won 7-5.

“That seemed to be the way the whole weekend went,” Dryden said. “We got off to a slow start, and there’s no excuses for that, but I’m proud of how we bounced back. We definitely ended the day better than the way we started the day.”

Whitefish has a full plate ahead of them this week, with duals against Hamilton and Corvallis on Friday before competing in the Bitterroot Invitational on Saturday.

Dryden said he and boys coach Chris Schwaderer both refer to the weekend as a turning point in the season, where in past years team chemistry has clicked and the team has started its push toward the end of the season.

While he’s hoping to flip that switch this weekend, Dryden said there’s still some work to be done in practice this week.

“We need to get more aggressive at the net in doubles,” he said. “We’re doing a lot of standing and watching. We’ve got to be moving and more aggressive.”
