The Whitefish track and field team got a shot at some high-level competition over the weekend at the Missoula County Invitational.

The boys finished 12th and the girls 9th out of the 13 teams that competed, which included both Class A and Class AA teams.

“It went really well,” head coach Derek Schulz said. “I think we kind of sent a message that we’re going to be competitive across the board for boys and girls. We definitely have room for improvement but it was exciting to see us step up and compete against some really high class competition down there in Missoula.”

While not too many Whitefish names showed up in the top 10 in an invitational featuring so many athletes, Schulz said the encouraging part is knowing his team was neck-in-neck with the rest of the competition.

“We’re competitive in all of them, that was exciting. Some of those don’t appear in the results because we’re in a meet with five AA schools,” he said. “That’s definitely a high point that we’re always looking for at this time in the season.”

Last Tuesday Whitefish also competed against area schools during the Flathead Time Trials, which Schulz sees as a great tune-up meet before getting serious about conference opponents.

“That’s a perfect meet for that time in our season, because you can really get out there and really have what amounts to be a really high caliber practice against competition from other schools,” he said.

The Bulldogs head down the road this weekend for the Columbia Falls Invitational, which starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Schulz said he’s looking forward to what his athletes can do again after a full week of rest and recovery.

“It’s nice to have a full week of practice, so we’re hopeful that the weather cooperates to have a really nice week of training without a meet in the middle,” he said.
