Students win new uniforms for basketball team
The Whitefish High School girls basketball team will have $2,000 worth of new uniforms next season, thanks to the work of three creative students.
Four groups of students in Dustin Herbert’s high school media communications class submitted a short advertisement video to Intrepid Sportswear. The team of Julien Leroux, Hans Mazur and Rose Madison were named as the winning entry.
Herbert said girls basketball head coach Ben Johnson received an email from Intrepid asking for student-made commercials.
“I think these students in particular were rewarded because of their creativity,” Herbert said.
The video depicts a “basketball coach, hopelessly searching for jerseys in their wild habitat” as Madison wanders through a snowy forest. Leroux narrates with a Steve Irwin-esque Australian accent, setting the scene like a wildlife documentary. A sales representative appears and attacks the coach, and the “little man” comes in after and takes his measly share. But, Leroux notes, it doesn’t have to be that way, and the rest of the video features the students showing off Intrepid’s selection of uniforms for different sports.
The students said better preparation was the lesson learned for this project.
“What we learned was it’s really good to be organized and prepared. Even if you know what you’re going to do, it’s good to bring your storyboard out anyway just to be safe,” Madison said. “Make sure you have everything you need ahead of time, so you can spend the least amount of time necessary in the cold.”
