Girls dominate Ronan XC meet
The Whitefish girls dominated at the Ronan Invitational cross country meet Thursday, claiming both the team title and the top individual runner.
Freshman Josephine Vardell’s 20:48:76 just beat out Corvallis’s Heidi Nisly to win by a second. Braya Hobson, also a freshman, came in eighth with a 21:40:12, Ella Greenberg took ninth with 21:25:03 and Jessica Henson took 11th with 21:50:35. Whitefish’s team score of 47 was just one point better than Corvallis’s 48.
“That’s a big deal for such a young team,” head coach Richard Menicke said. “I was really happy for the girls to experience that. The team had a great day and we’re moving in the right direction.”
The boys finished fourth in team scores behind Corvallis, Frenchtown and Ronan. Senior Ethan Potthoff had the team’s best time of 17:59:21, taking 19th place overall, and Josh Weller and Sage Cornelius finished after at 18:44:74 and 18:54:16 for 26 and 28th place.
The team travels to Missoula Saturday for the Mountain West Invite, where they’ll compete against Couer D’Alene and Spokane area schools in addition to Montana schools they don’t see often.
“For us, the great thing about Mountain West is that it’s like a state champ preview. It allows us to see more of Class A competition, which is very helpful,” Menicke said.
