The Bulldogs (1-2) made amends for last week’s scoring drought just 12 seconds into Friday’s 28-7 victory over Browning (0-3) in the nonconference contest at Memorial Field.

Senior Tyler Cote ran the opening kickoff back 85 yards for the Bulldogs’ first score of the night.

Quarterback Derek Kastella was off the mark in the first half, throwing a pair of interceptions and losing a fumble, but came up with a big touchdown run to put Whitefish up 14-0 in the second quarter. Kastella finished 13 of 23 passing for 150 yards, and gained 50 yards rushing.

Browning finally got on the board after a snap sailed over junior Forrest Kolbelt’s head on a punt attempt. The ball was recovered by Presley Crawford in the endzone for a touchdown. After a successful two-point conversion, the Indians trailed by just six.

Whitefish kicker Carver Gilman capped off the first half with a 30-yard field goal and started the second half with another 36-yard kick. Gilman nearly nailed a 45-yard kick a few drives later, just hitting the left upright.

Browning threatened to cut the deficit on two drives in Whitefish territory in the fourth, but the Bulldog defense held strong. Senior Sawyer Silliker recovered a Browning fumble on third and four from the Bulldogs’ five-yard line, and senior linebacker Travis Catina picked off a Derek Loring pass on the next drive.

Kolbelt came in at quarterback for the Bulldogs’ final possession and led a four-minute drive, capped off with a five-yard touchdown run by Kolbelt.
