Fern has demonstrated leadership

| October 18, 2016 4:27 PM

There are stark differences in the House District 5 race between Dave Fern and Chet Billi. Dave’s long-term commitment to the Whitefish School Board shows his strong interest in education and his dedication to public service. For more than two decades, Dave has demonstrated leadership and a very keen understanding of the budget process, making tough decisions and working with a wide variety of individuals. He has the ability to grasp and explain very difficult issues, is thoroughly prepared and hard working.

Dave’s opponent, Chet Billi believes teachers should carry guns in schools. I absolutely think teachers should not assume the liability of having a firearm in the classroom. Leave that to police and trained professionals. Chet does not support state funding for higher education. Without state funds, lower income students would never be able to afford to go to college. Paying for education is a “pay it forward” situation. Others supported me and my family as we worked our way through school and we will continue to help others who follow. Having an uneducated population and multitudes of individuals unable to reach their full potential will not serve society in the future.

And finally, Dave supports our public lands and keeping them in public hands. Maintaining the wonderful quality of life we enjoy is dependent on access to public lands. I hope you will support Dave, a truly dedicated public servant who will represent all of Whitefish.
