Fern says he offers an attainable, pragmatic approach to governance

The election for House District 5 allows voters to choose between contrasting platforms. My opponent, Chet Billi, has run an enthusiastic, positive campaign. I applaud his efforts and statesmanship but I believe his platform to be a framework leading to a dystopian society. Contrasting views which I oppose include:

Firearms in school: Initiative 175 or passage of a similar bill would allow all full-time employees of Montana school districts to carry concealed weapons in our schools. Such a law would by-pass local school boards and would not indemnify the district from legal action.

Minimum Wage: Abolition of a minimum wage.

Sustainable energy initiatives: Opposition to wind and solar, favoring a fossil fuel portfolio.

Medicaid expansion in Montana: Favors the rescinding of this statute which provides health insurance to the lowest income sector of our state.

Federal lands: Supports the transfer of federal lands to Montana.

Many residents within HD 5 express angst concerning such pocketbook issues as the lack of available affordable housing, high property taxes and water rates. At the state level, I have identified issues of concern including our aging population and providing necessary services to that population, our inability to effectively serve a growing number of foster children under state supervision, the special education funding shortfall faced by public schools, infrastructure needs throughout the state, and the life expectancies of our Native American population (significantly less than the non-native population).

There are stark contrasts in our priorities. I offer a practicable, attainable and pragmatic approach to governance. I ask for your support.
