AKTP production handles serious subjects well

I am writing to express my gratitude for the recent production of “Spring Awakening” by Alpine Kids Theatre Project. Given the serious subject matter, I know the directors were concerned about how it would be received by the audiences and parents of the Flathead Valley.

In fact, when I had heard about the content and language a few months ago, I’ll admit that I was concerned as well.

I feel compelled to write because the contrast between my fears and the reality of the production was so dramatic. Yes, “Spring Awakening” had difficult subject matter. Yes, it had some graphic language. But in this case the subject matter is difficult to face mostly because they are subjects too many people still avoid, even in 2016.

Child abuse, suicide, pregnancy, abortion — very shocking and uncomfortable to face, even when the victims are anonymous neighbors. Even harder when we put them in the context of affecting our own friends and children.

We as a society make progress against these tragedies only when we DO face them, admit our past failures, and vow “never again.” Thank you ATP for having the bravery to put on such an important and ultimately beautiful production. I have said many times that we are fortunate to have Betsi Morrison, Luke Walrath, and the entire ATP family as part of our valley, and I remain a big fan and supporter of their work.
