Mural brings splash of color to Muldown
Live, learn, grow and help. Muldown Elementary students hear and say those four words every day before class.
Teacher Kate Hunter asked her first- and second-grade students in the Advanced Learning Program to delve deeper into understanding what those words actually mean.
“We hear them every day, but why are we saying it,” she asked her class.
She challenged the group to write poems about each word, then transform those messages into art. Then end result is a colorful mural at the entry to the second-grade wing at the school.
“We broke into groups to write the poems, then we painted it,” Hunter said.
“They really loved it. It pushed the kids to understand what it means to be a good student.”
Each group worked on their own portion of the mural. Hunter, who has a background in art education, did the finishing touches to bring it all together.
“I often end up integrating art into our projects,” Hunter said.
Hunter explains that students in ALPS are seeking an extra challenge they can’t find in the classroom.
“It’s an extra incentive to work hard and set an example,” she said.
