Cutting golf course trees unnecessary

The Tee to Green column (Nurturing Healthy Greens, Feb. 24, 2016) seems so innocent unless one has gone over to the Whitefish Lake Golf Course over the past month.

Gone are so many nice and healthy trees that gave the golf course character. I believe this is excessive, and has adversely affected the beauty of the course. The trees reduce noise from Highway 93, which is only getting louder. Once we go in and chainsaw these down, one just can’t replace the beauty and character they provide.

I have been a longtime golfer, but I am quite disappointed with those on the golf course committee that decided this much uprooting of beautiful trees needed to be done to “nurture healthy greens.” When do we try and work with the constraints of nature and respect the environment.

This will only increase the amount of water needed on the course for irrigation since the shade is no longer available. And since the water is “free” for the golf course because of an agreement with the city, in my opinion, they could care less. Meanwhile, the cost of water for all Whitefish citizens is under review, and is going up.

It just doesn’t add up.
