Stolte wins Glacier Challenge multi-sport race

Caleb Stolte led all solo competitors and nearly beat every team at the annual Glacier Challenge multi-sport race Saturday in Whitefish.

The Whitefish athlete crossed the finish at City Beach in 4:19:33 to claim the individual title. Stolte’s time was only topped by powerhouse team NOMAD GCS 1, which easily won the team championship with a 3:45:42.

Forty-four teams and individuals came out for the annual race to support Flathead Youth Home. A new course centered around City Beach this year challenged competitors to an 8-mile run, 4-mile kayak on Whitefish Lake, 12-mile road bike on East Lakeshore, 8-mile mountain bike at Swift Creek, another 8-mile road bike, a 3.7-mile canoe/kayak on the Whitefish River, and finally a 5k run.

Makena Morley of Bigfork was the top solo woman, finishing in 4:44:27.

The Whitefish Lake Run was rolled into the Glacier Challenge this year.

Kalispell runner Luis Montano, 24, and Bigfork’s Logan Morley, 17, were elbow to elbow heading into the final hill climb of the 5k course. Montano pulled ahead just enough at the finish to get the win at 15:54. Morley crossed one second later.

Bigfork’s Jessica Johnson placed first among women with a 19:26.

In the 8-mile race, Tanner Boone of Fallon, Nev., took top honors at 46:28, while Kalispell’s Gillian Maness was the top woman with a 56:12.

The Lake Run 5k drew 172 runners, and 47 runners particiapted in the 8-mile race.
