With already an inch more of rain this month compared to last June, Whitefish Fire Chief Joe Page said conditions for fireworks are good heading into the Fourth of July weekend.

“We’ve got some decent moisture, so the city’s display should be able to go on without a problem,” Page said, noting that last year’s display was canceled due to extreme fire danger.

However, Page stressed caution for those planning to celebrate with fireworks at home.

“Everybody needs to be cautious and pay attention,” he said. “Mixing fireworks and alcohol is not a good idea.”

Personal fireworks can be used in Whitefish between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. on July 3 and 4, and can only be sold between noon and 8 p.m. between July 2 and 4.

Fireworks can only be used on private property and are not allowed in any Flathead County parks.

Fines for violating the city ordinance are $300 for first offense and $500 or imprisonment not exceeding six months for all subsequent offenses.

For safer celebrations, Page said people should pay attention to where they are in relation to fireworks, avoid tall grass and have a plan in case something does go wrong. Since most issues are personal injuries, he said, being smart and cautious about handling fireworks is key.
